With the majority of my projects, the “soundtrack” comes to me pretty quickly. Usually I just pick songs I think remind me of the tone and subject matter, or of a particular character, and throw it in there.
My current project has been in the works for three years now. It was the first novel I attempted to write, but abandoned it to write With Strange Aeons. I tried again for NaNoWriMo 2010, but personal issues got in the way and it sat abandoned once again.
Regardless, you would think that in three years I would know the songs that remind me of it, or that inspire me to write it. Hah. Not so much.
Building the “soundtrack” has been a slow process. But I love having a song list to go with my novels. Here are a few songs for my current project, so far …
Daniel, by Bat For Lashes
& when the fires came, the smell of cinders & rain perfumed almost everything, we laughed & laughed & laughed …
Mowgli’s Road, by Marina & the Diamonds

Rebellion (Lies), by Arcade Fire
